‘Laughter was, I’m sure, the key to victory’, Spike Milligan (1918-2002)
‘Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall’ is the first in – what became – a seven-volume series of Second World War memoirs by the anarchic Irish comic, Spike Milligan (1918-2002). Originally published in 1971, this first volume covers Milligan’s memories of army life from 1939-1943: from his father digging an air raid shelter; to service in Algiers. Written in classic Milligan-style, the episodic recollections of his life as a somewhat reluctant recruit mix hilarity with pathos as he recalls adjusting to army life but also recalling his comrades. Spanning his enlistment, training as a gunner at Bexhill, and embarkation, the tales give a rare insight into formative years. Illustrated with photographs and Milligan’s own drawings, the book is filled with laugh-out-loud incidents and bawdy humour. With strong and offensive language throughout, the book is not suitable for younger readers.
