Christmas bleatings: a charming, handmade woolly sheep ornament, complete with a knitted scarf to ward off winter chills. Counting sheep to send yourself to sleep is thought to derive from the ancient Celtic rhyming system of ‘Yan Tan Tethera’ (meaning ‘one, two, three…’). With many local variations across the length and breadth of the British Isles, the dialect stems from a Celtic language root, with specific words for numbers recited by the shepherds as they saw their flock safely home.
