Description
From the British Library, a fascinating and evocative delve into the layered history and evolving cultural associations of some of London’s most buzzing, eclectic and intriguing neighbourhoods. Soho: 'When the respectable Londoner wants to feel devilish, he goes to Soho', wrote Thomas Burke in 1915; and true for any point in Soho's colourful history. Soho developed into a fashionable centre for London's nobility in the 18th century but became a poverty-stricken hub of cheap lodging houses in the 19th century. Transformed in the 20th century, the 1960s saw the area became the cosmopolitan fashion and retail centre of the world, with nightclubs playing host to dynamic British youth culture. Illustrated with archival and contemporary images.
