Such textiles, with intricate printed or painted floral motifs, were a prized French import via Marseille in the 16th and 17th centuries; often called ‘Indienne’, the motifs inspired the development of characteristic Provençal floral designs. A powerful symbol across Turkey and the Caucasus, the tree of life is revered in Turkish folklore and represents abundance, rebirth and connection. Echoing the gold thread of the original’s embroidery the beautiful flowers and branches are picked out on the cover in jewel-like gold-foil accents. The diary includes a handy inside pocket and a practical elastic closure, plus a ribbon marker. Peelable stickers to the front and back cover.
